New Nedbank Cup record set for most ties to go to extra-time

PIC: Durban City’s last five Nedbank Cup ties have all gone to extra-time

This year’s Nedbank Cup has already set a new record for the most ties to have gone to extra time and has matched the highest number of penalty shoot-outs in the competition’s history.

Thirteen of the 28 ties in 2026 have gone to an extra 30 minutes, meaning a little under half (46%) have not been settled in 90 minutes.

There are still three matches to go, with the two semi-finals and the final on May 2, and the teams remaining in the competition are no strangers to extra time.

TS Galaxy will host Milford FC and Durban City will entertain Casric Stars. The ties are set for the weekend of April 4-5.

Durban City have seen all three of their ties in 2026 go to penalties. In fact, their last four Nedbank Cup fixtures have gone to spot-kicks, and their last five have gone to extra time. Their only defeat in that run was in a shoot-out to Marumo Gallants in the quarter-finals last year.

Casric Stars have gone to extra time in their last two Nedbank Cup ties, defeating Orlando Pirates on penalties in this year’s Last 16 and edging AmaZulu in the extra 30 minutes in the quarter-finals.

Milford FC have seen two of their three ties this year go to penalties, beating SSU M17 in the Last 32 and Sekhukhune United in the quarter-finals. They also famously beat Kaizer Chiefs on penalties in 2024.

TS Galaxy were taken to extra time by Gallants in the Last 32 this year, but have managed to finish their last two ties in 90 minutes, including a win over Mamelodi Sundowns.

The fact that we have had 13 ties go to extra time and nine to penalties this year is a huge change from 2025, when only five ties had an extra 30 minutes and two were decided on spot-kicks.

The fewest number of ties to have gone to extra time is four, in 2011, which resulted in two shoot-outs.

Before this season, 2021 held the record for most extra-time matches with 12 and what is now a joint record of nine shoot-outs.

Last year aside, there has generally been an upward swing in the number of ties that required an extra 30 minutes.

In 2020 there were 10, with seven shoot-outs, the first time the number reached double figures. That rose to 12 (9) in 2021, with 11 (6) in 2022 and 11 (5) again in 2023.

That dropped to 9 (7) in 2024, but is now well back above double figures.
